Wigrams Turn Marina

24 March, 2017

Kailani spends the  winter months at Wigrams Turn Marina, Napton on the Hill in Warwickshire.  The entrance of the marina from the canal is on the junction with the Grand Union Canal and the Oxford Canal at Napton, an ideal place to either go North to Warwick or South to London.

The marina is a secure mooring for us as people cannot get access from the towpath into the marina as the entrance is on the opposite bank. From the road at night there are security gates which need a fob to open them.

As Kailani is a widebeam boat we cannot use the Oxford Canal as it was built for narrowboats,  and the locks and bridges are too narrow.  This is a shame as we could do a full ring down the Grand Union to London, along the River Thames and back up the Oxford.  This is the downside of having a widebeam boat, but of course there is much more internal space available.

The marina itself has 226 fixed berth pontoons, all with their own water and electricity points.  It also provides Diesel, Pumpouts, Wood and Coal for any boater that may need it.  Marina staff are always around if any work needs to be done or just to ask questions.  There is a small shop within the office for essentials, including food, magazines, boaters requirements and chocolate!!  The office staff are always very welcoming and are quite happy to take in parcels and post for moorers.  Recently the shower block and toilets were renovated to a very high standard and there is now a spacious lounge for residents to use.  During 2016 they also opened a touring caravan park close to the marina office, so the whole marina can get quite busy in the summer months.

Throughout the year the staff run barbecues, fish and chip nights and get-togethers. These are well attended. Moorers also receive regular newsletters to keep us informed of what is happening.

Over the past 4 winters we have seen a steady increase of the number of boats moored here, especially Widebeams, as there are not many marinas that cater for them.

At the moment spring is upon us and the daffodils are out in full colour and the marina entrance flower beds are looking very attractive and welcoming.
