River Thames, Kennet and Avon and Grand Union Canal

30 September, 2013

Since updating the blog we came back down the Kennet and Avon to Reading and moored overnight at the Thames and Kennet Marina, our favourite on the Thames. Hi to Lee, Ceil and the rest. We were joined by a guest who travelled down the Thames with us just as the weather started to change. Not many people can say breakfast in Henley, lunch in Marlow and evening meal in Maidenhead – and all at the same table!

We continued down the Thames to Teddington were we moored overnight as we had an early start the following day.  Up at 5:30 for the 6:00 high tide through the tidal part of the Thames to Brentford and our return to the Grand Union Canal.

From there we headed up to Bulls Bridge and along the Paddington Arm to little Venice and a little way up to the Regents Canal past Regents Park and Zoo. Beautiful houses line this stretch of canal.  Back then off the arm and back up the Grand Union to Berkhamsted where we said goodbye to our guest.

We needed to stay here over the weekend as we could only pass through the Rising Sun Lock on a weekday!! Damage had been caused to one of the gates, so “for health & safety reasons”, CRT staff were on hand to operate the gate. No more to say, really!  The weather at this point was very changeable, sometimes sunny and other times utterly miserable but that is boating in the UK for you.

On our way up to Stoke Bruerne to collect 4 guests but as we reached the flight of locks the weather took a turn for the worse and we both get drenched.

Our guests arrived the following day bringing cake, wine and chocolates.  What a nice and unexpected treat for us. The first morning was miserable weather but then the sun came out and they spent most of the time sitting out on the bow deck.  Bonnie loved this as she got fussed a lot.

The bikes were out again which was good to let our guests burn off some of the food they had eaten. We had a really enjoyable time with the guests and a good laugh.

We are now taking a bit of time off to catch up with paperwork, washing etc.  Had a lovely meal at the Globe at Linslade – well worth a visit.  Filled up with water, did shopping and a pump out at Grove Lock Marina.  Woke up the following morning to absolutely beautiful weather, Gordon even back in shorts but you can tell we are in Autumn as all the leaves are changing colours and starting to fall.
