#25. Berkhamsted to Wolverton, 5 nights

Unfortunately, this route is booked.

A relaxing scenic journey passing quaint canal-side settlements, abundant open countryside and time for a half day visit to Blectchley Park home of the WW2 Codebreakers. In the main, we are cruising some of the finest areas of the Central Grand Union Canal.

We depart the historic town of Berkhamsted with the remains of the Norman Castle where William I received the offer of the English crown in 1066. Ensure you make time to visit the town.

View at Cowroast

We soon reach Northchurch and the oddly named Cowroast and pass through the deep and wooded Tring Cutting. Then on to Bulbourne and Marsworth, a busy meeting point where the Aylesbury and Wendover Arms join the Grand Union. This is an area of abundant wildlife where the Tringford and Marsworth reservoirs serve to maintain water levels on the canal system.

Beyond continues the lovely scenery of the Chiltern Hills and the open countryside before reaching Linslade, close to the site of the 1963 Great Train Robbery. We soon return to open countryside with lovely rural views. It is normally busy around the Three Locks at Soulbury, otherwise we travel in peace. At Fenny Stratford the swing bridge is unusually positioned between the two lock gates. Here we make a lengthy stop for a visit to Bletchley Park WW2 Codebreakers Centre.

B&B at Marsworth

Marsworth Flight of locks

On our lock-free circuit of Milton Keynes, we see the old settlements of Simpson, Peartree Bridge, Great Linford and Wolverton, yet you would hardly know the major city exists. This is a lock-free section of about 11 miles. We can call to see the majestic Buddhist Peace Pagoda near Willen Lake. Completed in 1980, it was the first in the western world.

Shortly before reaching the Milton Keynes boundary, we reach Wolverton, where the town’s Museum is worth a visit.

The journey is 30 miles with 30 locks and 2 swing bridges; enough opportunities to help if you wish.

Join us on Kailani at 2pm and we set off cruising at 3pm. Departure on your last day will be at 10am.

There are convenient railway stations at Berkhamsted and Wolverton.
