#5. Braunston to Linslade, 7 nights

Unfortunately, this route is booked.

Through the Shire counties of Northampton, Buckingham and Bedford. A relaxing scenic journey passing quaint canal-side settlements, abundant open countryside and two tunnels, Braunston and Blisworth which is the third longest on the English canal system.

Bridge on the GUC

One of the many bridges on the Grand Union Canal

At the start of our cruise we potter up the Braunston flight leading us to the entrance of the Braunston tunnel, which we tackle the following morning. This is  followed by a two mile open stretch to Norton Junction, then we negotiate the 7 locks of the Buckby flight passing under the Watling Street, one of the ancient Roman roads, now the A5 trunk road. We are accompanied by motorway and mainline railway for a while.

We can make a stop to visit the nearby Heart of the Shires Shopping Village, set in a courtyard of farm buildings with interesting retail opportunities, tea room and antiques.  We continue through scenic lock-free open countryside of Northamptonshire to Weedon, Nether Heyford and Blisworth, ready to pass through the 3057 yard tunnel the following morning.

Exiting the tunnel, we pause at Stoke Bruerne to visit the Waterways Museum and the old village. Next comes Yardley Wharf and the old village of Cosgrove, before crossing the Great Ouse aqueduct, (but don’t look down!). We now begin the long lock-free sweep where we thread our way past the medieval villages now comprising Milton Keynes. At Great Linford we can break to see the majestic Peace Pagoda.

Three Locks

The Three Locks on the GUC

Our next lock is at Fenny Stratford where the swing bridge is unusually positioned between the two lock gates. Here, we will make our lengthy stop, giving guests the opportunity of a full day’s visit to Bletchley Park, home of the WW2 Code breakers. We continue our journey through countryside as we pass more villages before arriving at our destination, Linslade.

The journey is 42 miles with 27 locks; enough opportunities to help if you wish.

Scenic and peaceful; probably the best summary of this popular 7 night journey.

Join us on Kailani at 2pm and we set off cruising at 3pm. Departure on your last day will be at 10am.
