A cruise bringing together scenery and wildlife, mixed with our industrial and national heritage. The final 2 hours is on the River Thames.

Before you join us in Berkhamsted we hope you take time to visit the town and remains of the Norman Castle where William I received the offer of the English crown in 1066.

Hemel Hempstead View

We head off down the locks as the canal begins to drop steeply.  We pass through an electrically operated swing bridge at Winkwell and continue towards Hemel Hempstead, seeing Apsley and Frogmore on the way.

Passing Kings Langley, we soon reach Whippendell Woods and the delightful Cassiobury Park area near Watford, where the Springtime bluebells are truly magnificent. At any time, look out for the kingfishers.

On our way to Rickmansworth we go through Batchworth Locks near Rickmansworth, where the re-constructed narrowboat “Roger” is on display.

Hanwell Locks on the GUC

View at Hanwell Locks GUC

We then head south to Harefield and Denham Deep lock which drops us over 11ft, the deepest on the canal. The canal gets busier in the Uxbridge area with “live-aboard” boats moored on long-term moorings. It’s not long before we pass Bulls Bridge, where the GUC Paddington Arm shoots off to take boats to Little Venice and central London.

Our journey continues to Hanwell and the lovely flight with one of the longest continuous walls seen anywhere in the country. Local historians believe it could be the longest continuous wall in UK !!

After Hanwell, we soon reach Brentford, where we pass through the Gauging Locks, then Thames Lock. Our last few miles up the River Thames are timed for the incoming tide to help us on our way up to Teddington, the limit of the tidal river. Then it’s a short burst up to Kingston, our journey’s end.

The journey is 37 miles with 52 locks; enough opportunities to help if you wish.

Join us on Kailani at 2pm and we set off cruising at 3pm. Departure on your last day will be at 10am.

The closest railway stations are at Berkhamsted and Kingston Upon Thames.
