#9. Henley to Newbury, 4 nights

Twin Cabin only available. To book this route, please fill out the booking form.

A relaxing and scenic cruise through Town and Country. Although this is mainly a canal route, the Kennet & Avon can be quite fast flowing, being a river navigation.

View at Sonning

From Henley we proceed upstream through Wargrave, Shiplake and Sonning, with lovely views en route. At Caversham, we turn onto the K&A, shortly encountering traffic lights controlling river traffic through Reading town centre. We soon leave the busy town behind us and cruise into open countryside and water meadows. The route of the canal constantly joins and rejoins the river Kennet and we encounter a number of swing bridges and locks.

At Aldermaston we will see our first mechanical lift bridge which we operate ourselves, including stopping the busy traffic flow.

Lock at Newbury

Carrying on, we reach Old Monkey Marsh lock, one of only two remaining turf-sided locks which has been listed an ancient monument by English Heritage.  The canal flows through isolated water meadows towards Thatcham and then onto our destination in Newbury.

There is an extensive wharf area and park in the centre of Newbury. The canal cuts right through the town. This area was originally the terminus of the Kennet Navigation from Reading.

The journey is 27 miles with 25 locks and 12 swing bridges; enough opportunities to help if you wish.

Join us on Kailani at 1pm and we set off cruising at 2pm.  Departure on your last day will be at 10am.

The closest railway stations are at Henley and Newbury.
